Experience Over Excess: Budget-Friendly Honeymoons That Still Feel Like a Dream
By Hannah Roze, Founder of Plannerd
You've spent months, maybe years, planning your wedding. The venue, the flowers, the endless cake tastings... it's all carefully curated and probably cost more than you expected. So when it's finally time to book the honeymoon, a $10,000 price tag is the last thing you want to see.
Your honeymoon doesn't have to break the bank to be unforgettable.
My own honeymoon is one of my favorite memories with my husband, right up there with the wedding itself and having our daughter. I wouldn't change a thing about it, except maybe the final bill. That realization is what got me digging into "experience over excess" destinations. Places that still check every box (international, gorgeous views, romantic vibes) without the gut-punch price tag.
The Problem with the "Classics"
The classic honeymoon spots are popular for a reason. But wow, the costs pile up.
A week in Switzerland can hit $6,000 to $10,000 for two once you add up flights, trains, and food. The Amalfi Coast is stunning but notoriously pricey during peak wedding season. And the Maldives? Those overwater bungalows start around $800 a night, and that's before you pay for the seaplane just to get there.
If you've already stretched your wedding budget to the limit, the last thing you need is money stress during what's supposed to be the most relaxing week of your life.
Budget-Friendly Alternatives That Still Deliver
There are so many romantic destinations that cost a fraction of the usual suspects. Here are a few swaps that still give you the scenery and the luxury, just without the wince-worthy bill.
Instead of the Maldives → Langkawi or Pangkor Laut, Malaysia
Same overwater villa vibes, crystal-clear water, and lush rainforests, minus the Maldives markup. A week for two in Langkawi often comes in between $2,000 and $4,000, including flights from many U.S. cities if you go off-peak.

Instead of the Italian Coast → Montenegro or Croatia's Dalmatian Coast
All the Mediterranean magic you want. Terracotta roofs, cliffside villages, sunset seafood dinners, for roughly half the price. Montenegro is especially under the radar right now, so you get fewer crowds and way better rates at boutique hotels.

Instead of Switzerland → Slovenia
Alpine lakes, snow-capped peaks, actual fairy-tale castles. Lake Bled alone is worth the flight. A week for two (with flights) runs closer to $3,000 to $5,000, which is a big step down from the Swiss premium.

Instead of Bora Bora → Fiji or the Cook Islands
If your heart is set on a South Pacific trip, the Cook Islands and Fiji have gorgeous beaches, warm hospitality, and overwater rooms at way lower nightly rates than French Polynesia.

Instead of Santorini → Naxos or Milos, Greece
You still get the Aegean sunsets and whitewashed villages, just without the Santorini tax. Naxos and Milos are every bit as beautiful and way more relaxed.

How to Actually Budget for It
The biggest mistake couples make? Treating the honeymoon like a totally separate expense and then panicking when the reception eats the bank account.
The smarter move is folding the honeymoon into your overall wedding budget from day one.
That's exactly why we built the Plannerd Wedding Budget tool. Set your total number, carve out a honeymoon category alongside venue, catering, and photography, and you're forced to see the full picture before you start spending.
Here's how Plannerd keeps your trip on track:
Track it all in one spot. No more messy spreadsheets. One dashboard, all your deposits, all your spending, updated in real time.
Never miss a payment. Honeymoon bookings usually need deposits months out. Our reminders make sure nothing slips through the cracks.
Share the load. Planning with a partner? Share access so you're both looking at the same numbers. No more "Wait, I thought you booked the flights" moments.
Make smarter trade-offs. Not sure how much to put toward the trip vs. the flowers? Plannerd suggests spending percentages so you can decide where to go big and where to pull back.
The Real Secret
The best honeymoon isn't the most expensive one. It's the one where you actually relax, explore, and celebrate without checking your credit card balance every morning.
Pick a beach in Malaysia or a trail in the Slovenian Alps. What matters is that you planned for it and budgeted for it early. Your future selves, sipping something cold on a beach that didn't cost $10K, will be glad you did.
